Session: Session 6. Pipeline Integrity Management and Risk Assessment
Paper Number: 119322
119322 - Key Elements of Risk-Based Integrity Management Strategy
While industrial facilities include many systems, not all can be classified as critical based on the environmental and financial consequences of their failures. Therefore, the first step in establishing an integrity management strategy is to rank the different systems according to their criticality-based risk level. The risk level is based on assessing the likelihood of failure and the consequence of such failure. This requires thorough understanding of the hazards and the degradation mechanisms of each system. This understanding will serve as the basis for establishing an effective integrity management program that is commensurate with the risk level. Elements of such an integrity management program need to include five key components. These are inspection, monitoring, surveillance & data analysis, leading and lagging performance targets, contingency plans, document access and control, and proper organizational structure. The paper discusses procedures for risk assessment and the key components of the five key elements of an effective integrity management program. A transportation system using pipelines will be used as an example to demonstrate the strategy.
This paper will be divided into the following sections:
-Risk Ranking Methodology
-Considerations for Establishing the Likelihood of Failure
-Elements of Effective Pipeline Integrity Management Program
-Example Using the Strategy
